Like you, we love good writing.
A smartly-written sentence, a descriptive paragraph that makes me forget for a moment where I am, the end-of-a-chapter that all but forces me to keep reading — all of these are bliss for readers.
The mission of The Bookcast, since its inception, has been to introduce you to indie authors who are producing this kind of compelling writing.
And sometimes we find a book that is exceptionally good.
Introducing The Bookcast’s “Book of Exceptional Quality” Honor
That is why we are delighted to announce The Bookcast’s “Book of Exceptional Quality” honor, to draw attention to the very best indie authors.
The first recipient of this designation is Christopher Ryan‘s hardboiled New York police thriller “City of Woe.”

We anticipate naming a “Book of Exceptional Quality” at irregular intervals, likely about once or twice a month.
It is not an award that authors compete for. There are no entry forms or fees. It is certainly not for sale. The “Book of Exceptional Quality” is our way of saying, while all of the indie author books featured on The Bookcast are very good, a few are exceptionally good.
What the “Book of Exceptional Qualtiy” Is Not
When talking about what a Bookcast “Book of Exceptional Qualtiy” is, let’s also spell out what it is not.
The designation is not intended as some shorthand for, “This book is good enough to be picked up by a mainstream, Big Six publisher.” We believe all of the books whose authors we interview on The Bookcast are good enough to compete with their mainstream contemporaries.
This new designation is our way of calling attention to the very best of our already-above-average crop.

Chris Ryan reads “City of Woe,” the first recipient of The Bookcast “Book of Exceptional Quality” distinction.
Genre is not as importratn as quality of writing, quality of storytelling, and quality of the reading experience
And that quality is our promise to you.

I am completely awed by this shocking, wonderful surprise. My experience on The Bookcast was fantastic, and I thought the enthusiasm for the book was really kind, but this…
I am thoroughly energized by The Bookcast’s generosity. At a time when core scenes for CITY OF WOE’s sequel (currently called A THOUSAND CUTS) have been starting to pour out, this really inspires me to keep going.
To have the work recognized by a industry veteran who is not obligated to ever mention this novel again is the kind of affirmation that writers dream about receiving. You have my deepest gratitude and appreciation. Thank you.
Chris, you are most welcome! My choice was clear, as soon as I got into “City of Woe.” It is absolutely in the “big leagues,” and I eagerly await the sequel.
A great new step along your chosen path of helping authors. Congratulations, Bill.
