Indie author Jen Barton

Fiona Thorn is an ornery orphan – with an expertise in explosives. When Fiona sets out to rescue her imprisoned friend Jaydin Rowan, she wants nothing more than a few sleeping guards and a satchel full of Blast.

What she gets is a run-in with three bickering princesses that puts all four girls on the wrong side of a locked dungeon door.

So now, in Jen Barton‘s book for young readers, “Fiona Thorn and the Carapacem Spell,” Fiona has become accidentally involved in a plot to assassinate the King. And she’s accused of kidnapping the princesses.

Fiona now must find a way to free them all, save the King, and rescue Jaydin – all while struggling to pay the magical debt that’s slowly killing her.

Unless, of course, the princesses’ annoying sibling rivalry kills her first.

The Indie Author Life

The single most common question many authors get is, “Where do you get your ideas?”

Jen Barton remembers precisely how “Fiona Thorn and the Carapacem Spell” came about. She told BookGoodies:

A young friend, Rehanna Lydon, was diagnosed with cancer at age 9. She and her family were visiting, and during a long day in a car packed with kids, everyone started telling stories. That was the day Fiona was born. Rehanna died last summer, but not before seeing Fiona in print. Rehanna has been my inspiration as I wade through formatting documents, self publishing and marketing. My struggles are so small compared to what hers were.

I hope to be able to share Fiona with other readers and perhaps make enough money to donate some proceeds to the American Cancer Society.

P.S. Despite the somewhat somber story of inspiration, rest assured Fiona is not. Fiona is a fighter, and funny, too. Just like Rehanna.
