The Indie Author Life

In a recent interview with thrillerink.com D.V. Berkom revealed more of how she writes, and the indie author life:

How do you research your books?

In addition to searching the internet and reading books on the subject, I try to travel to the settings as well as interview folks who do the same kinds of things my characters do. For instance, I was fortunate enough to meet and interview a member of the Special Forces for Yucatan Dead, as well as travel to the Yucatan Peninsula. For Bad Spirits, I got to work with a retired DEA supervisor and pick his brain on all things DEA. One of my critique partners is a retired detective from Southern California who is a big help on the Leine Basso series. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of fabulous and interesting folks and go to some remarkable places, all in the name of research.

What are your thoughts on self-publishing verses traditional publishing?

I love being an indie. I’ve been a small business owner and enjoy being responsible for all the facets of getting a novel finished and out there for folks to enjoy, from the conception of the idea all the way to marketing and sales. It’s never boring, that’s for sure.
