Kathleen Maher wrote "Diary of a Heretic" while she raised two children in suburban Tarrytown, New York. An excerpt from the novel reached finalist status in the inaugural Richard Hall Memorial Short Story Contest sponsored by the Lambda Literary Foundation in 2000. Kathleen Maher is the author of Underground Nest, a novella, and her short fiction has appeared in literary journals including Ascent, Black Warrior Review, Confrontation, Cottonwood, Descant (TCU), Gargoyle, Passages North, and The View From Here. Her work has been short-listed in numerous contests, including The William Faulkner Society Novel Competition, Iowa School of Letters Award, and Drue Heinz Literature Prize.
